Christine Ladd-Franklin (1847-1930) was the first American woman logician and the first woman to complete the requirements for a PhD at Johns Hopkins University. After providing a new solution to an open problem in algebraic logic in her dissertation, she went on to have a ground-breaking career in psychology.

Research as a composer consists of composing original music, rather than the more usual writing books and articles. My work is typically focused on choral pieces for small ensembles, exploring pared-down, ‘primary’ musical syntaxes and systems, with particular emphasis on modality, microtonality, modularity and indeterminacy.

Northamptonshire peasant-poet and nature writer, John Clare (1793–1864) is a significant figure in Romantic-era literary studies, whose influence on nature writing is still felt to this day. Clare studies have been booming since the 1990s, with Clare’s writing being seen as particularly relevant to our exploration of different ways of relating to the natural world.
